A Week In The Workshop 197 - ending badly

Direct link - https://youtu.be/xOyBQ6c-QO4

Hi all. So from the excitement of the Building Bloqs visit, the Square Enough giveaway, and a chat about the economics of a plywood square to some wild future ideas and more.

But before we get to any of that, I must apologise for the unholy mess of a 'renewal' period, when the transition from one year to the next was supposed to be seamless, but ended up like two single beds pushed together hoping they'll make a double; never works, does it - unless you apply towels...

Anyway, nobody died, I think I have most of the Plus members I started out with - and it's the weekend. Enjoy!

See you in the midweek.

Peter

That Bloqs space looks really interesting, we have one similar place here in Chicago that I visited 3 years ago. Place like that is great value if you want access to machines that are exceptionallly costly and/or an individual doesn't have the space for. Did the Bloqs space also have a range of laser cutters?

Cheers Paul. Yes, definitely good value for those expensive but infrequently used bits of gear! They had one laser and a couple of 3D printers - they were fairly high-end (they reckoned the laser would cut through 18mm ply!) but they seemed slightly embarrassed that was all they had and were keen to emphasise the plans they had to improve that side of things as well. 👍

hi peter have you gave the finsa twin colour mdf a thought for your squares the do a grey with a yellow core similar to the 10minute logo colour could give you even less work branding your products

Hope this helps

Bloqs looks very interesting. There's something on a much smaller basis for makers near me called Make Gosport and I had a chat with one of the guys at Makers Central last year, but still haven't got around to having a visit to check it out.

I also had the idea of adding some extra holes to the squares & use the 20mm PVC conduit to hold in place, but haven't got around to that either 😂.

The bloqs shared space is interesting, and some serious machines available included in the price, which if you're in the making business looked quite reasonable https://members.buildingbloqs.com/price-list/

I thought the spaces looked quite small at first sight with the cheapest being smaller than my 3m square workshop and Peter's space would be in the jumbo category! But of course all the cutting and big machine work is in the shared space, the work areas are just for assembly so you don't need as much room.

Welding I am keeping firmly in the category of “no I am not going to buy a machine from Lidl/Aldi and learn to use it”. Have plenty of other tools already and plenty of stuff that takes up my time before I start adding welding to the list.

But still, I do keep thinking about it …..
