AWITW 241: Walk & talk...

For Behind the Scenes, Marking Out and At The Bench members

Hi everyone! Hope all’s well; todays AWITW is mostly the walking tour of the Benchdogs factory, and apologies again for the shaky video - it is what it is.

It’s a great space and fascinating to see everything working together, raw materials in one end and finished products out the other, and many, many processes in between! Really interesting anodising line as well - mostly over my head at anything other than a very superficial level, but still interesting to see.

Ralph told me he’s considering an open day once the Ultra MFT is in production, and I think I’ll try and make it across for that one if I can.

Other than that there’s a bit of chat about the next ‘big build’ video, should be out next week, and the next order of business for me should be the Metabo MFT; I want to try and get that shot this week coming, so I’ll have some of that video and some candid comments about it for you soon.

But that’s where we are for now; thanks so much for all your support, enjoy the rest of the weekend and I’ll catch you in the midweek.

Best, Peter

Always nice to see where something was made! Thanks for the tour. Impressive facility to say the least. After watching the video I went out to the shop to fondly look at my Benchdogs MFT Fence and Steel Square.

As a lifelong vegetarian (52 years in September), I tip my hat to Mrs. 10 Minutes.

The benchdogs factory is something else didn’t expect it to be that big to be honest the table looks great i have an mft 3 but i use it for my conturo but i think the bench dogs table may be better for me because you can make it longer and i would imagine it is more sturdy than the mft 3 people will always moan about price but i have a few bench dogs items and they aren’t cheap but you certainly get what you pay for with them all well thought out and made to last

Wow! Really impressive how Ralph has been able to grow his business over the last few years with quality products that people actually want. If all his other gear is at the level of excellence as the large triangle I purchased (which I’m sure it is), then his prices are spot on!

Great Video Peter and a tonic to see a UK manufacturer doing well. The bench looks beautiful, look forward to your deeper dive on it. Do you think it could be used without legs? I sit my torsion box bench across a pair of drawer units. Overall the cost is not bad compared to say a pre-cut Paulk Smart Bench. Plus you get extras.

Thanks Adrian! IT can certainly be used with the legs folded up; I did wonder if Benchdogs would offer the top and frame without the legs, but perhaps too early in the development cycle for that! I’m sure they could be removed though. 👍

It always intrigues me that people complain about the price of items. Unless you are spectacularly ham fisted or unlucky, these should last a long time and be viewed as a long term investment. I am not a tradesperson but even out on site you would get a minimum of 5 years out of them? If being used in a work shop as a stable platform, you could be looking at a lifetime. You may have to replace the worktops but you have a foundation for years. Divide the cost over 5 or 10 years and then see how expensive it is. With all of the design, research and development and then set up costs to get something like this to…

I agree Richard. This isn’t something you buy every 12-18 months, it’s intended as a one-time purchase, perhaps to be added to one the years, but the core of a system than can grow with you. 👍
