Form vs Function [AD][video 582]

For all 10MW Plus members

This video is sponsored by Woodworkers Guild of America. The first 1,000 people to use my link will get a full year of Premium membership to Woodworkers Guild of America for only $1.49:https://go.wwgoa.com/petermillard/

In this one I use an ongoing project to discuss the three-way pull of Form, Function and Fabrication; the design considerations we need to take when making anything for ourselves, or clients.

Legacy video is from member content; join the conversation as a 10minuteworkshop Plus member on a paid subscription to enjoy more exclusive videos.

NB: I leave the ad read or 'integrations' in these videos in case they are of interest to members; use the chapters to skip them if they're not for you.

I always saw the wwgoa stuff and thought it was a bit of an odd thing and so never looked into it fully. Your Ad has me thinking I should probably have given it more time and for all of about £1 for a year if there are still any sign up spots left I should give it a go so thank you.

As for the bel am I had been watching with interest as being 6’3” tall whilst as a step up it was fine as I don’t often need that much extra height everything about it felt a 20% size increase would be ideal for me! A bekvam xl if you will! I had been wondering why plans…

I guess it's not saving any space yet, at least in your shop, but I have great faith in your ability to overcome the technical aspects involving the stability. When he was a little boy, I made a small one-step stool for my son to stand on to brush his teeth at the bathroom sink (it still resides there) and i tapered the legs at 5 degrees inward, which dramatically improves the stability and virtually eliminates the tendency to tip. This might be easier to accomplish than you may think with your build, even though it would involve some 85 degree cuts. You might also make use of a design with a foldable bottom step using a 1"- t…

The WWGOA video archive is handy when one needs quick insight into a scenario.

George’s long video with the Titebond Glue expert was very insightful.

If a tactile warning is needed under foot to not stand on the edge then how about sticking a 12 or 18mm wide strip on the top parallel to the side edges. That strip could have curved bevel edges so it is still comfortable to sit on. It just needs to be high enough for your foot to feel it. With that arrangement the top can still be resting on the side A-frame legs rather than within them.

Thanks Carherine. The top can’t extend beyond the frame, so there’s no difference that I can see between having a strip planted on top of the seat, to the seat being in a rebate on the frames? 🤔🤷‍♂️
