Why Buy a 3D Printer? [member edit]

For all 10MW Plus members

In this one I try to cut through the noise to take a neutral look at a 3D printer, the Bambu Lab P1s, to see if it’s something I’ll be able to use productively. This isn’t the first 3D printer I’ve owned, but at least I’ve taken this one out of the box; wether it’s a keeper or another to be given away remains to be seen, but if you’re on the fence about 3D printing then join me on this journey and see if it might also be for you. Enjoy!

It's noisier than I expected Colin, though I did pump the volume up on the video for dramatic effect! 👍

welcome to the dark side peter :)

i think of a 3d printer like the difference between doing tenons with 3 tools vs a domino. yes people create useless stuff and people sometimes print stuff just to use a 2d printer. I didn't have any experience with 3d software and learned fusion from a product design youtube channel and can do most things now, probably not the most efficiently but it works. I like it for making tool organizers, they are more compact, faster to create and repeatable vs me doing them in wood. I needed a specific right hangle adaptor for my router dust collection and all the off the shelf stuff wasn't right so I designed and pri…

The big problem for me with 3D printers is simply that the world needs less plastic waste not more! On one hand we're trying to recycle as much plastic as we can but we have also created a whole new industry.. that generates plastic waste.

Whilst PETG can be/is? plant based it is not recyclable at home only industrially (if you can find someone honest who will actually recycle it).

The sooner someone makes an easily recyclable filament for prototyping the better.

Because a YouTuber pointed out that there was a Black Friday sale at Bambu lab 😂

Having watched the video now I am surprised how much more involved the unpacking was for your until however it has the enclosure and I didn’t get an AMS lite. I’d be interested if part of slow print speed is down to vibrations through the table it’s on although I think your total time for the print included set up. My first print was in hand in about 20 mins which was the cable clips that are over the top and my benchy took about 15 mins and I was shocked how fast the printer moved.

Having seen everyone rave about how fast these printers were, I was amazed at how slow it was! Everything's relative! The bench is absolutely solid, and the printer is just held down under it's own weight. 👍

Good video & review Peter and I agree that sometimes it is quicker just to make some workshop stuff from scraps, than design it in Fusion then wait to print it 🥱.
