A Week In The Workshop 240: Balancing act

For all 10MW Plus members*

Hey everyone. In this one there's some plungesaw chat in the light of the just announced Rutlands cordless saw AKA the Wen-alike, especially in relation to the guiderails which, I don't think will be compatible between the 'badge engineered' corded and cordless Rutlands saws.

Have to say the evolution guiderails are excellent - I think I like them more than the saw tbh - and in workshop news I've finally got my hands on the additional LED panels for my ceiling lights - I just need a cooler day to fit them!

I'm away to Taunton on Monday to see Ralph at Benchdogs, and hopefully get the details on the new 'Ultra MFT' bench, and I'm also doing an interview with the builder re the 'big build' videos on Wednesday, so I may not have a midweek for you, but if I can get something together I will.

Thanks everyone for your support, enjoy the rest of the weekend, and I'll see you as soon as I can.

Peter

Hey Peter! To add one more to you tracksaw bucket list: Graphite 58G495 corded saw has variable speed 2200-5200RPM! :)

After some search, I could only find it in eastern European webshops, and no manufacturer's website? Some stats: ~110 GBP without track in a local webshop with 3 years warranty; 165x20mm blade; 0°- 47° angle; 57mm / 52mm depth of cut; 4.6kg

For example:

Their own track seems to be similar to Einhell track: https://szerszamparadicsom.hu/products/58g495-731

I recently retired my De Walt track saw, which is ok and is usable with Festool rails for a TSC 55 KEB. It was on offer with batteries and charger at a very good price. Wow what a saw, and the convenience of cordless is very welcome. Especially as I use my polytunnel as an overspill workshop. So my experience is that you get what you pay for. All these look alike are interesting but in the end don’t match up to Festool. The time I have wasted with inferior results is being easily recouped.

Interesting that the budget friendly saws seem to come and go. I’m glad to see there are other brands/manufacturers that have filled the gap and hope they stick around for a long time. Really want to hear your thoughts about the Benchdogs mft.

Thanks Paul! Had a great - but long - day at Benchdogs. Will try and report tomorrow, but Uktra MFT bench video out for Friday, definitely! 👍 I guess the ‘white label’ saws are easy to come and go - no big investment, just buy a pallet load, brand them and see what sells? 🤷‍♂️👍

Peter, I don’t need a reply on this.

You have the most prolific and attractive channel in this spectrum.

I have a hard time understanding why so many manufacturers are willing to enter and invest in this aggregate of plunge/track tools when so many exist already and all stand in contrast to Festool.

It’s why I would never make it in business or marketing I guess.

Your coverage of it though is tenacious and very much appreciated.

Lastly, we can’t get black mdf in Oregon and we are pretty upset about it.

Thanks mate. //John in Salem

Hi John and thanks! It’s a congested space and I guess every manufacturer fancies a slice! 👍

Hi Peter,

Thanks for another interesting and thought provoking video.

The fact that the Parkside track saw is based in the Einhell is a fun fact.

So am I right in thinking the Einhell tracks, Parkside or Festool are all good options for the Parkside track saw?

Hi Ken and thanks! Honestly, I’d avoid the Parkside and and Einhell tracks because of their limitations; Festool are great, Evolution are best value. 👍
