AWITW 261: everything’s relative

For all 10MW Plus members*

Hi all! Bit of general chat today and a closer look at Plus member Paul’s wardrobe plans - hope Paul doesn’t mind!

I forgot to mention in the video that Paul had also asked about Formaldehyde in MDF, and it’s worth reminding ourselves that one of the benefits of using MR or Moisture Resistant MDF is that the binders used in the manufacture of MRMDF are formaldehyde free, so the only formaldehyde in MRMDF is the naturally occurring chemical in the wood fibres that the board is made from.

There is a fair bit of ‘headless chicken’ panic around MDF the resurfaces periodically but as I said in the forum you’ll have more contact with formaldehyde if you hug a tree whilst wearing a market-stall t-shirt** than you ever would from cutting into a sheet of MDF, let alone having painted MDF in a room.

I’m helping my son move house this week (advisory capacity only!) so not sure if I’’ catch you on Wednesday, but I’ll definitely see you next weekend for the last AWITW before Christmas.

Thanks everyone, and enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Peter

**In her day job Mrs 10M was technical head of clothing for a very large high street retailer, and whilst formaldehyde is banned as a finishing agent in the UK/EU it does still get used in the far east / India / Bangladesh where standards are a little looser.

Thanks Peter, I appreciate the critique and great community comments. I'll order those adjustable brackets now and incorporate all these helpful suggestions.

Interested to see how you like that flat tooth blade and how it cuts. Your suggestion of a 100mm plinth gives me some ideas on levelling some workshop base cabinets. Video #344 has some shots of you installing the bracket on top of the wardrobe carcasses at 5:30 in. Link: https://youtu.be/V9tLZpFUidw?si=DcX0BT58N4jeQpJ3

CMT make some FTG grooving blades, I think Badger Matt uses one. IIRC there are 3mm and 6mm versions at 180mm diameter.. I don't know if they do other sizes.

Thanks Paul. Yes I think they do 150mm as well, my main concern would be using a reducing ring to get it onto a 20mm arbor as I’d expect eg the 6mm kerf to have quite a lot of mass when it’s spinning. Also need to check the insert plate nand below-table dx shroud around the blade too, but definitly worth a look, thanks!
